Android is a Linux-based operating system designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphone & tablet computers.
In September, 2003, Android (Inc.) was founded in Palo Alto, California, U.S.A by Andy Rubin (co-founder of Danger Inc.), Rich Miner (co-founder of Wildfire Communications, Inc. ) and other members with the aim to develop an advanced operating system for digital cameras. At that time, Symbian and Window Mobile are the 2 mobile OS dominate the mobile application market in the world. They realized that the market wasn't large enough, there should be a new thing that would rival Symbian and Windows Mobile
In 2005, Google acquired Android Inc. for $ 50 million. The key employees of Android, including Andy Rubin, Rich Miner continued to work at the company. Not much people was known about Android at that time, but they assumed that Google was planning to enter the mobile phone market with this acquisition. Andy Rubin led a team to develop a mobile device platform powered by the Linux kernel - a platform on the promise of Google that providing a flexible and upgradable system.
On November, 2007, the "Open Handset Alliance" with the consent of Texas Instruments, Broadcom Corporation, Google, HTC, Intel, LG, Marvell Technology Group, Motorola, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile has been established with the aim to develop open standards for mobile devices

From 2008 to present, Android has seen updates which have incrementally improved the OS, adding new features and fixing bugs in previous version.
Each major release is named in alphabetical order after a dessert or sugary treat. For example, Android 1.5 released on 30 Apr 09 named Cupcake, Android 1.6 named Donut, and Android 2.0 - Eclair. The latest version is Lollipop released on November, 2014.
iOS (previously iPhone OS) is a mobile operating system designed specifically by Apple Inc. to work with Apple mobile devices - iPhone, iPod, iPad. Apple has dominated the market for many years, even other competitor started to rival iOS, especially Android leading the pack. The standard price of any Apple devices is always higher than others and Apple has many restrictions on iOS apps that user have to follow and then can install on their own devices - it prevents users from other mobile app developer which are direct competitors to Apple's own application.
You believe it or not! When Apple released iOS, it was pathetic compared to other platforms. In 2007, other platforms such as Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Symbian or BlackBerry OS are on the top. For more information, at the time - 2007, iOS doesn't support 3G, no multitasking, can't install 3rd party mobile apps, no "Copy and Paste" text, doesn't support attachments in email, MMS, and doesn't support tethering, not allowed to edit text, voice calling.
Instead of competing on the configuration, Apple focused on the experience of the user, the speed, the stability of the application and only in the first few features alone but all the features that are extremely better than what is available on the market. There are many innovative, breakthrough in iOS since it released on 2007.
The iOS was officially released with the iPhone on June, 2007. Initially, 3rd party mobile apps weren't supported. On October 17, 2007, Apple announced that a native SDK was under development and they planned to put it "in developers" hand in Feb, 2008. On March, 2008, Apple released the first beta, along with a new name: "iPhone OS". On June 2010, Apple rebranded "iPhone OS" as "iOS"
